Japanese and Filipino high school students cross-learning about disaster risks and preparedness [Japan + Philippines]
On May 8th, the Community Development Club of Hyogo Prefectural Himeji Commercial High School and Inabanga North Central Integrated School Secondary – DepEd Region 7 in Bohol Island, the Philippines, had an online meeting to learn about disaster risks and individual disaster preparedness in their respective cities/towns. This online meeting was conducted as part of the “Youth Development in Disaster Risk Reduction through Cross-Learning Programs between High School Students in the Philippines and Japan.”
In the presentations prepared by each school, Himeji Commercial High School presented past floods in their city as well as the Nankai Trough Earthquake, which is considered to strike a wide area of Japan in the near future. They also introduced cultures in Himeji City and their club activities. On the other hand, Inabanga North Central Integrated School shared videos of Typhoon Odette in 2021 and wildfires, accompanied by pictures showcasing their efforts in climate change adaptation and mitigation, such as tree planting and clean-up drives.
Additionally, they showed each other their emergency bags to learn about individual disaster preparedness strategies. In addition to the bags, they discussed heatstroke prevention measures, recent disasters in Japan, and items required when traveling in the Philippines, deepening their understanding of disaster preparedness while practicing English.
Both schools will continue to organize online sessions to enhance understanding of disasters in both countries and communication skills, with a plan to conduct a face-to-face exchange in Bohol.
This project is funded by the Tokyo Club and private donations. We would greatly appreciate your donations.
