Lecture about gender and disaster risk reduction [Online/HQ]
On 22nd November 2023, SEEDS Asia was given the honor to introduce out projects in Japan to Resilience Innovation Knowledge Academy (RIKA), an NGO with extensive research activities in India and other South Asian countries.
During RIKA’s online event “Learning from Japan’s DRR – National and Local Policy, Grass-Root Activities and Gender Perspectives”, Executive Director Mitsuko Otsuyama presented “Women in Recovery from a Disaster - Inaudible to Audible” introducing SEEDS Asia’s activities and learnings gained from them.
Ms Suvendrini Kakuchi, a former president of the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan and SEEDS Asia’s board member, moderated the discussion by Dr Takako Izumi, Professor of Tohoku University and Auditor of SEEDS Asia, on disaster recovery policies at national, prefectural, and city levels after the East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (2011). Executive Director Otsuyama presented detailed lessons and experiences gained from SEEDS Asia’s projects in Japan. Ms Horiguchi represented her company Nihon Bosai Joshi (“Japan disaster risk reduction females”) gave a speech on their good practice on disaster awareness.
During the Q&A session, researchers and practitioners from India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, exchanged questions to explore what among the lessons and experiences of Japan would be compatible/adaptable in their own contexts.
We sincerely thank RIKA for this online workshop.
