DepEd Region VII’s Climate Change Caravan 2023 [Philippines]
On October 13th and 14th, the “Regional Climate Change Caravan,” organized by the Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Office VII, unfolded on Olango Island, a small island situated not far from the renowned resort destination of Mactan Island. This event garnered participation from around 150 individuals, including DepEd and school personnel, learners, including Alternative Learning System (ALS) learners, community members, and representatives from stakeholders. Together, they demonstrated their unwavering commitment to combat climate change and unify the education sector in Region 7.
The activities on October 13th included a climate change symposium for learners from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), presentations on climate change adaptation and mitigation (CCAM) activities by DepEd Regional Office VII and Schools Division Offices (SDOs) within Region VII, a disaster memorial activity conducted by SEEDS Asia, and activity reports from participating organizations. October 14th was filled with diverse activities such as mangrove planting, a clean-up drive at the Olango Island Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary (OIWS), and sessions designed to enhance comprehension of migratory birds and the marine ecosystem at OIWS and San Vicente Marine Sanctuary.
Towards the conclusion of the event, it was emphasized that DepEd Region VII will focus on implementing regular CCAM activities in schools, extending beyond the scope of this caravan. SEEDS Asia remains committed to supporting DepEd’s initiatives related to climate change adaptation.
A separate report on SEEDS Asia’s disaster memorial activities during the Climate Change Caravan will be provided at a later date.
