Forewarned is forearmed: Teacher training at Toba Elementary School [Toba/Japan]
On 27th July, a training session for teachers of Toba Elementary School was organized online, where Specially Appointed Professor Ranko Kishida of Shiga University (also Technical Advisor of SEEDS Asia) and Ms. Mitsuko Otsuyama, Executive Director of SEEDS Asia took part as resource speakers.
SEEDS Asia has been working with Toba Elementary School since 2019, when the school participated in teachers’ training organized by Dr. Yukihiko Oikawa, a board member of SEEDS Asia. The school faces tsunami risks triggered by a possible Nankai Trough Earthquake along the Pacific ocean, and accelerated depopulation in the city. With its slogan “Passing on our lives and living on in Toba” for the promotion of disaster education incorporating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the school has been tackling these issues through curriculum management since 2020 to establish disaster risk reduction in education as a sustained whole-school initiative.
Toba takes pride in its splendid sceneries along the ria coast, and the city’s education is vital in passing on its local industries including pearl farming, tourism and fisheries. The next generation also will need to face the impact of climate and environmental change. SEEDS Asia will keep on supporting the Toba kids so they will become capacitated local and global citizens.
