Construction of rainwater harvesting system has started [Bangladesh]

On 4th November, the kickoff meeting (which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic) for the construction of the rainwater harvesting system at the Model Academy was finally organized! A total of 21 people participated in the meeting, including the school principal, Mr. Dewan Abdul Mannan (Councilor from Ward 11) and Mr. Mohosin Alam (from the construction company).
Dr. Tariq, the superintending engineer from North Dhaka City Corporation and staff members from the SEEDS Asia Headquarters also participated online in the meeting. Dr. Tariq spoke about the importance of school-based disaster risk reduction and the usefulness of rainwater harvesting in urban areas.
Construction of the rainwater harvesting system is expected to be effective in responding to fires which have been increasing in Dhaka in recent years, and improving hand washing and hygiene aspects on a daily basis, as a preventive measure for COVID-19.
SEEDS Asia and its partners in Bangladesh hope that the construction progresses steadily and smoothly!
Rainwater “harvesting” systems are very popular in developing countries. Such a system captures rainwater, and directs it from large surfaces such as a roof to an underground or over-ground holding tank. The harvested rainwater is then filtered and pumped directly to be used for different purposes, including flushing toilets, washing hands, drinking water, gardening and irrigation, etc.
In areas with high disaster risks, having a steady source of local water is very important. SEEDS Asia’s project in Dhaka North City in Bangladesh has installed such a rainwater harvesting system to provide water during emergencies.
