9th Memorial of Cyclone Nargis [Myanmar]
It has been 9 years since the Cyclone Nargis swept off Myanmar, and took the lives of 138,366. Today, the Memorial ceremony of Cyclone Nargis and installation of screen for weather observation were held in Kungyangon DRR activity centre on 2nd May 2017 organized by SEEDS Asia with the support from SOMPO JAPAN Nipponkoa Environment Foundation for the screen for weather observation. After Mr. Win Shwe from Relief and Resettlement Department (RRD) Yangon Office, Mr. Min Khine Win from Kungyangon General Administrative Office (GAD), Mr. Keiji Okada from SOMPO JAPAN Myanmar Office, Ms. Mitsuko Otsuyama from SEEDS Asia Headquarters delivered addresses at the ceremony, all participants had silent pray in memory of the victims of the Nargis. Kungyangon DRRAC introduced what it has done since the Nargis and is going to do in the future for disaster preparedness.
SEEDS Asia installed the screen in Basic Education High School (BEHS) 1 Kungyangon and explained how to utilize the screen for education purpose to the participants including Ministry of Education, community members, teachers and students. Daw Yi Yi Nyien from DMH also gave precious advice on weather observation for the school. Lastly, representatives of organization cut the ribbon for its ceremony. We truly hope this screen for weather observation will enhance the understanding of weather information among the children in Myanmar so that they are able to take appropriate actions.
