SEEDS Asia 15-Year Anniversary Meeting
SEEDS Asia turned 15 years old, thanks to all of you! We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincerest gratitude to all friends who stayed with us throughout these years.
SEEDS Asia’s origin can be traced back to our partner, SEEDS India, which was established in 1994, a year before the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995. The tragic disaster revealed the significance of self-help and mutual help, based on which the Hyogo Framework for Action with special focus on community-based disaster risk reduction (DRR) was approved and recognized as a global challenge.
With SEEDS India, a pioneer in community-based DRR, and a few other DRR experts who formerly worked at the United Nations Centre for Regional Development, jointly launched SEEDS Asia in 2006, as a Kobe-based international NGO to be a medium to connect policy and action for DRR in order to reduce disaster impacts in Asia.
Later on, SEEDS Asia worked in various countries and regions with the cooperation of communities and schools, and with the help of our local teams and counterpart organizations, to strengthen locally implemented DRR programmes. We hope to further enhance this approach we have applied over the years in the Asia Pacific region, which is to address and challenge the social vulnerability that could exacerbate disaster impacts, by ensuring the presence of “human technology” that leaves no one behind in the course of community development. We would deeply appreciate your warm guidance, cooperation and support to continuously strengthen this approach.
