Lecture delivered to the teachers of Toba Elementary School [Toba/Japan]

On 7th January, SEEDS Asia Technical Advisor Ranko Kishida and Executive Director Mitsuko Otsuyama were invited by Toba Elementary School in Mie Prefecture to participate in a special workshop as lecturers.

Ms. Kishida served as the principal of Kyoto City Municipal Takakura Elementary School until the end of last year, and has been cooperating continuously with SEEDS Asia since 2016, visiting project sites and providing training lectures in projects being implemented in India and Myanmar.

Kyoto Municipal Takakura Elementary School is one of the first elementary school that has been implementing the concept of a school management council by the community, as a part of the “Bangumi Elementary School” established by the local community members about 150 years ago.

Ms. Kishida has considerable knowledge in community school management, as well as researching and writing experience in the field of curriculum management. She became a technical advisor of SEEDS Asia in 2020, and this time she delivered a lecture under the theme of “How to promote curriculum management” as the request of Toba Elementary School.

One of the teachers participated in the workshop said, “We could learn that by creating grand design of school management, annual teaching plan for each grade, curriculum management that designed to achieve the educational goals, and “human resources map”, it will be easier for every teacher to work on educational activities smoothly at the beginning of the year. It is not something that is created from the beginning or relying on an individual’s power, but it is tools created based on a common understanding. I think this enables us to promote “sustainable education” at the school.”

Based on the approach that considers disaster risk reduction education as an integral part of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), SEEDS Asia supports the development of human resources that supports sustainable development, which is capable of responding to complex and intensifying risks in Japan and abroad.  For example in Japan, as the risk of Tonankai / Nankai Trough Earthquake increases, we will keep supporting the development of comprehensive school disaster management, by among other initiative developing and delivering lectures or educational tools, so that schools can implement effective disaster risk reduction education and management.
