New methods of commemorating past disasters [Myanmar]
SEEDS Asia is fully utilizing online platforms to conduct meetings and workshops in different parts of the world amid the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, the training for DRR leaders of Wa boet Chin boet village in Myanmar was organized using online platforms and tools. The training theme for October is “Recording and passing down knowledge on past disasters” and the session on 16th October covered a variety of methods used in Japan to record and cascade the memories of past disasters for and to the next generations.
In Myanmar, past disaster incidents are embedded in the lifestyle of the affected people and households. They can be found in, for example, elevated floor level of houses, livelihoods and daily lives.
It was agreed among the participants that localized versions of ideas such as songs and events used in Japan to involve children in the process of sharing past incidents and establishing a common vision of the future community, are quite effective.
This project is being implemented as a Grant Assistance for Japanese NGOs, a scheme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Japan.
